The Psychology of Cultural Identity

Many individuals identify themselfs based on culture or membership in social groups. People usually have more than one such identity. Of particular interest to us are bicultural persons - individuals who identify with two cultures. We aim to investigate how these two identity goals interact. Further context factors will be analyzed.

These studies will be theoretically based on Symbolic Self-Completion Theory. This theory conceptualizes identity as a goal individuals strive to. A second theoretical foundation will be Goal Systems Theory, which is concerned with the structure and interactions of multiple goals.

We plan to specifically investigate Turkish/German individuals, as they are the largest group of biculturals in Germany. However, if you have ideas for a smaller study focussed on other groups or on immigrants in general, this may also be possible,
It is possible in this project to work within the outlines of an existing and allready planned study and to create your own experiment.
